Lasagna Recipe

This easy 3-cheese lasagna recipe is super filling and delicious. This homemade lasagna is better than any restaurant version and has fed the crowd!

Lasagna Ingredients:

  • 9 cooked lasagna noodles
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce (3 cups)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine (any kind) or beef broth
  • 2 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (15-20% fat)

Cheese Sauce Ingredients:

  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley, plus more for garnish
  • 1 large egg
  • 15 ounces low-fat ricotta cheese
  • 16 ounces of low-fat cheese


How to make meat sauce:

  • Place a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium/high heat and add 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 pound ground beef, and chopped onion. Fry the meat, breaking it down, for 5 minutes or until the meat is no longer pink. Add the crushed garlic and saute for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add 1/4 cup of the wine and stir for 2 minutes or until the wine has almost evaporated. Add 3 cups of marinara, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, ¼ teaspoon thyme, ½ teaspoon sugar, and 2 tablespoons parsley. Bring the mixture to a boil over low heat, then cover and cook for 5 minutes.

How to make cheese sauce:

  • In a large bowl, combine 16 ounces cheese, 15 ounces ricotta, 1 cup mozzarella, 1 egg and 2 tablespoons parsley. Mix well.

How to prepare the lasagna:

  • Heat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add salt and 9 lasagna noodles. Cook until fully cooked according to package directions.
  • Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the meat sauce in the bottom of a deep 9x13 casserole dish.
  • Add 3 noodles, spread over 1/3 of the meat sauce and sprinkle 1 cup mozzarella cheese. Pour the mixture on top with half of the cheese sauce.

Repeat until you have 3 layers of noodles:

  • Add 3 noodles, 1/3 beef sauce, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, 1/2 cheese sauce
  • Add 3 noodles, 1/3 of the remaining meat sauce, and the remaining cup of mozzarella.
  • Insert 9-12 toothpicks into the surface of the lasagna (to keep the tin from sticking to the cheese). Cover with tin foil and bake at 375°F for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the tin foil and toast for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the cheese is golden brown. Let the lasagna rest 30 minutes before slicing
