Easy Cheese Danish Recipe

This Danish recipe with cream cheese is easy to prepare! The Danish cheese filling tastes just like cheesecake and the fresh berries and lemon glaze add a bright flavor.

Ingredients

Danish cheese ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups berries, (raspberry, strawberry, cranberry)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon peel from 1 lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 pound puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed

Egg Wash Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 egg

Lemon Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

Instructions

How to make Danish cream cheese:

  • Defrost the pie dough according to the directions on the package. Preheat oven to 400°F with rack in center of oven. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper or Silpat liner.
  • In a large bowl, combine 8 ounces soft cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 egg yolk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon lemon peel. Beat mixture together on medium/high speed until creamy and smooth.
  • Open the first sheet of puff pastry on a clean work surface and gently roll it into a 10 x 10 square. Use a pizza cutter to cut each sheet into 12 equal slices.
  • Combine 2 of the strands by pinching the ends together tightly and then twisting the strand from top to bottom. Press one end to your work surface and wrap the twist tape around it, center outward. Pinch the end to secure it to the pastry. Flatten the center a little with fingertips and poke the center a few times with a fork to prevent the center from puffing out too much.
  • Place 1 tablespoon of the filling in the center and press the berries halfway into the cream. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 for the remaining strands and the second sheet of puff pastry. Transfer the filled pastry to a lined baking sheet, leaving at least 1/2 of a space between them.

How to make egg and bread wash:

  • In a small bowl, mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon water. Beat well with a fork.
  • Brush the outside edges with egg wash and bake in the center of the oven at 400°F for 18-20 minutes. Allow to cool completely to room temperature for the cream cheese filling to set properly, then sprinkle with a layer of lemon.

    These are amazing! we mixed things up and tried making multi-berry and individual berry versions of this, and in the end nothing crowns the Blueberry ones, with that lemon zest and lemon cream cheese, these are to die for! Thanks for the recipe, I also love the cream puffs too.

    I made these and they turned out AMAZING!! I used blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries and having fresh berries baked in made all the difference! Between the flakey crust, the silky cream cheese filling, the berries, and the lemon glaze, these are a delicious crown pleaser!! Super simple too.
